1 Arrested, 1 At Large Following Armed Standoff On Detroit's West Side

April 16, 2019 - 9:02 am

DETROIT (WWJ) - One person is in custody and police are searching for another following an hours-long standoff with a barricaded gunman in northwest Detroit.

Officers responded to a home on Heyden near Glencoe, in the area of 7 Mile and Evergreen roads, around 4:50 a.m. Tuesday after a child called 911 and said his stepfather was beating his mother.

"Officers made contact at the location with a male occupant, who in the officers' opinion appeared intoxicated," Police Commanded Darren Szilagy told WWJ's Charlie Langton. "The officers were able to see a woman and some children in the house."

Szilagy said the officers retreated after the man threatened them with a gun and told them to get away before shots were fired.

Around 8 a.m., the mother and four children -- all under age 13 -- were released from the home. About an hour later, the situation ended peacefully when a man and woman surrendered to police. The man, who was armed, was taken into custody.

Police are still searching for the stepfather, who may have escaped when the child called police.

This isn't the first time police have responded to the home for domestic violence issues, according to Szilagy.

The incident remains under investigation.

No injuries were reported.
