August 19, 2019 - 10:10 am

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police in Detroit are investigating half-a-dozen shootings since Saturday night, leaving one man dead and six people injured.

The fatal shooting happened early Sunday morning at a block party Stansbury near McNichols and the Lodge. Police said a 26-year-old man who was shot in the back and died at the scene, while a second person was shot in the leg. Details, including circumstances surrounding the shooting and the name of the victim, have not yet been released.

Also Sunday, a man was shot inside Papa's Coney Island on Kelly on the city's east side.  Details aren't known, but police say the shooter had a permit for the gun and is being questioned about the incident that left the victim critically hurt.

Separately, a man was wounded early Sunday at Sussex Street and Joy Road. Police said the victim ran into a house for help after he was assaulted by a trio of suspects and then shot.

Saturday night, police said a 30-year-old was able to drive himself to a hospital after he was shot in the area of 7 Mile and Gilchrist St.

Other shootings Saturday included a 27-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman wounded on Greusel Street, and a 23-year-old man who was shot multiple times at a Zoom gas station on Plymouth Road.

The violence weekend came a couple of months after a coney island shooting that prompted police to call for and end to the barrage of gunfire in the city.

Pushing a "Check yourself" slogan for the summer, Police James Craig urged Detroiters to think before they open fire over trvial arguments. “Someone cuts someone off on the freeway, how do you predict that? So this is more of an educational campaign to say basically, stop the violence," he said. "But to stop the violence, you must first check yourself.”

Anyone with information on the shootings is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-SPEAK-UP.
