1 Killed In Crash At Groesbeck Highway, Metro Parkway In Clinton Township

May 08, 2019 - 6:27 am

CLINTON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Police in Macomb County are investigating a fatal crash that left both vehicles mangled and debris scattered across the roadway.

The crash happened around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Groesbeck Highway and Metropolitan Parkway in Clinton Township.

Authorities say a Clinton Township police officer was conducting radar surveillance on Metro Parkway just east of Groesbeck when he clocked a black Buick Rendezvous going around 75 mph. The officer pulled out and turned on his headlights just in time to witness the crash -- the Rendezvous smashed into a Chevy Malibu.

The driver of the Rendezvous, a 24-year-old Detroit man, was killed.

"It is a tragic incident and if there is one fortunate thing out of this is that it was such an early hour of the morning on a weekday where traffic was low. But nevertheless, a tragic incident," said Sgt. Anthony Coppola.

The driver of the Malibu was taken to the hospital. His current condition is unknown.

Westbound Metro Parkway and both directions of Groesbeck Highway are closed as police continue an investigation. Eastbound Metro Parkway remains open.
