10-Year-Old Charged After Bringing Loaded Gun To School

January 12, 2019 - 9:52 am

FLINT (WWJ/AP) - A 10-year-old boy is facing serious criminal charges after taking a loaded handgun to his school in Flint.

The Genesee County Prosecutor's office has charged the boy with two felonies -- carrying a concealed weapon and felonious assault -- and a misdemeanor charge of having a weapon in a weapons-free zone.

The boy was arrested Thursday morning after telling fellow students at Eagle’s Nest Academy that he had a gun, according to police. A classmate was able to get the weapon and took it to the administrator's office.

Officials say the handgun was stolen, but it's unclear where the boy got it.

The boy remains in custody at the Genesee County Regional Detention Center. His name is not being released because of his age.

In response to the incident, administrators at Eagle’s Nest Academy say all students will now be required to use clear, see-through backpacks, which will be provided by the school.
