11 People Rescued After Boat Overloaded On Oakland County Lake

July 05, 2018 - 5:16 pm

WEST BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) - A group of 20-somethings had to be rescued after some bad decisions were made July 4th on an Oakland County lake.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, 11 young men and women went overboard after finding they'd overloaded a ski boat on West Bloomfield Township's Pine Lake.

Sheriff's officials say when another vessel passed the packed watercraft, throwing a heavy wake, water swapped the overloaded boat. Fearing the boat would sink, those on board -- ranging in age from 22 to 24 years old  -- donned life jackets and jumped into the water.

The OCSO Marine Unit Patrol Boat assigned to the lake responded along with several other Good Samaritan boaters who assisted in helping everyone out of the water and back to the shore.  No one was injured, and the disabled boat was towed to the dock.

The sheriff's office estimate the boat was overloaded by around 450 lbs.

It's unclear if the operator of the boat, identified as a 23-year-old West Bloomfield woman, was cited for any violations. The others aboard were from West Bloomfield, Bloomfield Hills, Farmington Hills, Macomb, Taylor, Clawson, Ann Arbor and Plymouth.

Officials said alcohol was not a factor in the incident.
