PONTIAC (WWJ/AP) - A 20-year-old Pontiac man is facing several charges after police say his 14-year-old cousin was shot in the chest by a handgun that he had stashed under a mattress.

Damari Mahone was arraigned Thursday on charges of involuntary manslaughter, delivery and manufacture a controlled substance - heroin, and two counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Bond was denied.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office says Mahone, who was responsible for the gun, took Yaharre Stennis to a hospital in Pontiac about 2:40 a.m. Monday. The teen later died.

Police say Mahone allegedly stored the .357 caliber handgun under the mattress and was telling Stennis to move from the bed when it accidentally fired and struck the teen in the chest.

Investigators also found a.22 long rifle in the home, in the 100 block of Willard Street, along with 9.9 grams of heroin and a small amount of marijuana.

Mahone is due back in court July 24.
