MASS CITY, Mich. (WWJ) -- A 16-year-old boy was killed in the Upper Peninsula Friday afternoon in what police have ruled to be an accident shooting.

An investigation revealed two teen boys, ages 13 and 16 were at the 13-year-old's residence in Mass City -- an unincorporated community about 80 miles west of Marquette, Mich. -- when the younger boy was loading a rifle and the weapon accidentally discharged.

Ontonagon County Sheriff Dale Rantala says  the 16-year-old was hit in the back and a 14-year-old boy that was also at the residence called 911.

The victim was taken to Ontonagon Aspirus Hospital via ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.

WLUC TV 6 in Marquette initially reported that the incident was a hunting accident, but the sheriff's office says it was not, because they were not in the act of hunting at the time.

Presumably, the boys were getting ready to go hunting, as firearm deer season opened in Michigan on Thursday.

One man was accidentally shot and killed northeast of Traverse City on Thursday.
