2 Dead After Police Chase, Crash In West Bloomfield

May 08, 2019 - 5:17 pm

WEST BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) -  Two people are dead following a police chase that ended in a crash in West Bloomfield.

The situation unfolded around 4:15 a.m. Wednesday when a Farmington Police officer attempted to stop a SUV at 13 Mile and Northwestern Highway for a traffic violation.

The SUV fled at a high rate of speed, police said, and the officer gave chase. A short time later, as the vehicle entered West Bloomfield, Deputy Police Chief Curt Lawson said police made the decision to terminate the chase.

"Shortly after that pursuit, there was a traffic crash in the area of 14 Mile and Orchard Lake and we can confirm there has been one fatal," Laswon said.

The SUV smashed into a light pole and split in half near a busy roundabout.

A man, later identified by police as 36-year-old Mathew Lee Mercado of Waterford, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said a second person in the SUV, a 24-year-old Warren woman, was also taken to a hospital. Police Wednesday afternoon issued a news release saying that she'd died. However, they later issued a correction say she was in fact still alive, and on life support. In a statement sent shortly before 9 p.m., officials said the woman had died.

"After confirming with multiple sources I have confirmed that the female from today's traffic crash has passed away within the last hour. I again apologize for the mix up earlier today," a spokesperson said in the statement."

Circumstances leading up to the chase, including why the suspects may have fled police, remain unclear. Police did not say which of the people was driving.

Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Charlie Langton said debris was scattered at least 100 yards away from the crash scene. Drivers were urged to avoid the area while police were investigating.

An investigation is ongoing.
