WATERFORD (WWJ) - Two women are dead after their vehicle ended up in a pond at a condominium complex in Waterford.

Officers responded to the Saybrook Pointe Condominium Complex just before 11 a.m. Wednesday and arrived to find a vehicle submerged in a small pond.

Waterford Police Chief Scott Underwood says an initial investigation revealed that an 83-year-old Waterford man driving a blue, 2019 Ford Escape stopped in the parking lot near the 5000 block of Amherst Court and got out of the vehicle to go inside the residence, leaving the transmission in drive.

Police say his 81-year-old wife and 56-year-old daughter, who were both disabled, were both still inside the vehicle. While the man was inside, the vehicle rolled forward and down a small embankment and into the pond. Police did not release the names of the victims or the man.

The vehicle became completely submerged with both women still inside.

First responders were able to extricate both passengers from the vehicle and began rescue efforts. Both women were taken to area hospitals for treatment, but neither survived.

An investigation is still ongoing.
