23 Michigan Beaches Closed Due To High Bacteria Levels

July 09, 2018 - 10:34 am

ST. CLAIR SHORES (WWJ) - Warmth and sunshine in the forecast will make it a great week to hit the beach -- but you'll want to check this list before you head out.

As of Monday, July 9, a total of 23 beaches are closed statewide due to high levels of bacteria in the water. That's down from a solid two dozen in late June, but up a couple from last week. Most of the affected beaches are located in the Upper Peninsula, which experienced heavy rains and severe flooding in recent weeks, but a few are downstate.

In Metro Detroit, a couple of beaches that had been shut down due to e. coli in the water are once again open this week -- including Macomb County's Lake St. Clair Metropark Beach, aka "Metro Beach" -- after tests found it's safe the swim. (Note that St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach remains closed).

Beach-goers should note that testing by the Michigan Department of Environmental quality is conducted at 1220 public beaches and 537 private beaches throughout the state all summer long, so it's a good idea to check back for updates.
