3-Year-Old Detroit Boy Shoots Self In Stomach

Police say he is clinging to life

DETROIT (WWJ) - A 3-year-old boy is clinging to life after police say he accidently shot himself on Detroit's east side.

It happened Tuesday morning in the 5900 block of Marcus, off Conant Street between Gratiot and Mt. Elliott.

The child was shot in the stomach and brought by his father to Children's Hospital, where he remained in "extremely critical" condition Tuesday evening.

According to police spokeswoman Holly Lowe, the child apparently was playing with the gun when it fired. The parents had initially reported that the shot came from outside the home, but Lowe said investigators knocked down that story.

The weapon has been confiscated, police said, and the boy's father was arrested while Wayne County prosecutors review possible charges against both parents.

Police are asking for the community to pray for the little boy.

No names have been released as an investigation continues.
