3-Year-Old Girl In Critical Condition After Being Shot In Head

The girl was caught in the crossfire at a Detroit gas station

DETROIT (WWJ) - A three-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was shot in the head Saturday afternoon.

The shooting happened at a Citgo gas station in the 15000 block of Livernois Avenue near Puritan Street shortly before 2 p.m. according to police.

The shooting stemmed from a verbal altercation inside the gas station. The altercation moved outside building and became physical when one man went to a vehicle and retrieved a gun, firing several shots at the other male. The male took cover behind a vehicle that a mother and her three-year-old daughter were inside of. The shooting continued, and that's when the girl was shot.

Assistant police chief Arnold Williams said the mother initially took the girl to their home in the 15000 block of Prairie St. Police were called to the residence and then transported the girl to a nearby hospital.

A suspect is in custody, and police are still determining whether others were involved. No description of the suspect was given.

This shooting comes just days after a seven-year-old was caught in the crossfire and shot in the neck while playing in his bedroom.

"We have a lot of individuals out here who have problems with conflict resolution," Williams said. "They do not know how to peacefully resolve conflict. If I have an issue with you, we need to talk it out. I don't need to go get a gun, I don't need to throw a fist. At this point, they're getting guns and they're not hitting one another, they're hitting innocent bystanders."
