LANSING (WWJ) - Four people from southwest Michigan could spend the rest of their lives in prison after allegedly plotting to kidnap, rape, torture and murder a young child.

Attorney General Bill Schuette on Friday announced charges against 37-year old David Bailey of Coldwater, 32-year old Matthew Toole of Battle Creek, 32-year old Talia Furman of Springfield and 19-year old Jayme LaPointe of Athens.

Investigators say the group was conspiring to kidnap a young child from a public place, subdue the child and then torture and sexually assault the child until their death. Then, according to police, they would dispose of the body.

Michigan State Police were investigating three people for child pornography when detectives uncovered conversations about plans to commit the acts.

The group reportedly talked about kidnapping a child from fairs in Branch, Calhoun and Jackson counties, as well as from Walmart and Meijer parking lots, and a few local parades.

All four are currently in custody and awaiting arraignment in Branch County. Each are charged with three counts of conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and conspiracy to commit criminal sexual conduct -- first degree.
