WWJ -- Four Michigan cities have been named among the best beach towns near lakes to live in across the country.

WalletHub.com put together a study of the beach towns in the U.S. that are most suitable for everyday life. The study is based on a number of factors, including housing costs, economy, weather, safety, education and health, as well as quality of life. The list was based on living standards, not tourism.

While nearly 150 ocean-side towns were studied, there were only 46 lakeshore beach towns on WalletHub's list. Four of them are in the Great Lakes State -- Traverse City, Holland, Alpena and Port Huron.

Traverse City, nestled along the southern shores of the Grand Traverse Bay in Lake Michigan, took the top spot on the list, thanks to a high quality of life ranking and a relatively affordable cost of living. Holland, located on the west side of the state near Lake Michigan, came in at No. 4 overall, but ranked near the middle of the pack for safety.

Port Huron, No. 31 overall, was the closest city to the metro Detroit area that appeared on the list. The city got a favorable weather ranking, but ranked near the bottom for safety.

Alpena came in at 18th overall and got the top spot in the weather category and was top-five for low housing costs.

Naples, Florida, was ranked as the top ocean-side community in the country.
