Airlines Issue Weather Waivers Ahead Of Hurricane Florence

DETROIT (WWJ) - With Hurricane Florence expected to hit the east coast late Thursday, several airlines are offering waivers to travelers.

If you booked tickets to parts of the east coast such as Charleston and Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, Savannah Georgia, and Richmond, Virginia -- many airlines are issuing waivers. 

Some airports in the hurricane zone are expected to close runways by midnight Wednesday. Forecasters said hurricane-force winds will be blowing ashore late Thursday or early Friday as Florence stalls along the coast before dumping a torrential 1 to 2½ feet of rain. 

Delta Airlines

People flying to the following airports between Sept. 10 and 17 can make a one-time change to their travel plans without incurring a fee. Rebooked travel must begin no later than Sept. 20.

  • Fayetteville, NC; Greensboro, NC; Jacksonville, NC; Norfolk, VA; New Bern, NC; Myrtle Beach, SC; NewPort News, VA; Raleigh Durham, NC; Richmond, VA; and Wilmington, NC.

American Airlines

Change fee will be waived for passengers with reservations between Sept. 10 and 16 to/from any of the following cities, if you can travel by Sept. 10-19 and change your origin and destination to another city.

  • Asheville, NC; Augusta, GA; Charleston, SC; Charlotte, NC; Charlottesville, VA; Columbia, SC; Fayetteville, NC; Florence, SC; Greensboro, NC; Greenville/Spartanburg, SC; Greenville, NC; Hampton, VA; Hilton Head, SC; Jacksonville, NC; Lynchburg, VA; Myrtle Beach, SC; New Bern, NC; Norfolk, VA; Raleigh/Durham, NC; Richmond, VA; Roanoke, VA; Savannah, GA; and Wilmington, NC.

United Airlines

Change fee and any fare difference will be waived for flights at the following airports between Sept. 10 and 16. Those who reschedule flights after Sept. 20, the change fee will be waived but the difference in fare may apply.

  • Greenville/Spartanburg, SC; Columbia, SC; Myrtle Beach, SC; Charleston, SC; Wilmington, NC; Fayetteville, NC; Raleigh/Durham, NC; Charlotte, NC; Greensboro, NC; Asheville, NC; Roanoke, VA; Norfolk, VA; Richmond, VA; Charlottesville, VA; Shenandoah Valley Airport, VA; and Savannah, GA.

Spirit Airlines

Modification charge/fair difference for flights to/from the following airports between Sept. 12 and 16 will be waived through Sept. 20. After the date the modification charge is waived but fare difference may apply

  • Asheville, NC; Greensboro, NC; Myrtle Beach, SC; and Richmond, VA.

Southwest Airlines

Customers with flights to/from the following airports between Sept. 10 and 17 may rebook within 14 days of their original day of travel without paying an additional charge.

  • Baltimore/Washington; Charleston, SC; Charlotte, NC; Greenville/Spartanburg, NC; Norfolk/Virginia Beach, VA; Raleigh-Durham, NC; Richmond, VA; Washington Dulles International; and Washington DC Reagan National.

jetBlue

People flying to the following airports between Sept. 13 and 15 can rebook flights for travel through Sept. 20 with change/cancel fees waived and fare differences waived.

  • Charleston, SC; Charlotte, NC; Raleigh/Durham, NC; Richmond, VA; and Savannah, GA.
