Organizers say there is a shortage following the holiday week

July 09, 2018 - 8:01 pm

(WWJ) -- The American Red Cross is asking for citizens to donate blood as soon as possible.

The Red Cross announced an emergency blood shortage following the Independence Day holiday week. Organizers say due to the holiday, there were 15,000 fewer blood donations -- and 550 fewer blood drives held -- last week.

The organization says the shortage is escalating and it is encouraging all blood types to give as soon as possible.

Appointments to donate can be made at redcrossblood.org. Arrangements to host blood drives can also be made on the website.
