DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are investigating after a baby fell from a second story window.

The 8-month-old old boy remained hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday, following the incident at around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 19500 block of Hickory, near E. State Fair and Schoenherr Rd. on the city's east side.

The child's mother told police she'd left the baby on a bed -- which was pushed up against a window -- when she went downstairs to get a bottle.

The woman said she heard a thump and ran back up to find the baby had pushed a box fan out of a window, and the tumbled out after it, falling two stories to the ground.

There is no word yet on whether any charges are possible in the case, but police said they believe this was an accident.

The child's name was not released.
