'Beyond Tragic': Detroit Man Charged In Shooting Of 2 Adults, Assault Of 2 Kids

July 12, 2019 - 4:03 pm

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit man has been ordered held without bond, charged in a violent attack on four people, including two young children

Daryl Michael Edwards, 24, was remanded to jail following an arraignment in 36th District Court Friday.  Along with three counts of assault with intent to murder, he faces two counts each of home invasion, assault with intent to do great boldly harm, and felony firearm, according to the Wayne County Prospector's Office.

Investigators said Edwards broke into the home of his ex-girlfriend on MacKenzie Street at 5 a.m. and shot the 29-year-old woman and her 39-year-old boyfriend. It is alleged that Edwards shot the male victim multiple times and shot the female victim in head.

It was initially believed the children had also been shot, but authorities now say Edwards cut the woman's 8-year-old son with a knife on the ear and hand, and hit his own 3-year-old daughter with a blunt object, causing injuries to her face.

A third child in the home, an 11-year-old boy, got away and called police. Edwards fled on foot but was tracked down by police and arrested the next day.

"The allegations in this case are unsettling because, in this defendant’s world, being rejected meant that his ex-girlfriend and her male friend should  be violently assaulted. And if there were children in the vicinity -- even if one of them was his own child -- so be it," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement, adding,"Beyond tragic.”

Edwards will remain behind bars as he awaits a probable cause conference scheduled for July 19, followed by a preliminary exam set for July 26. Both will be held before Judge Lynise Bryant in 36th District Court.

He faces up to life in prison if convicted as charged.
