LEROY TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Crews had a hefty mess to clean up after a crash involving a truck hauling watermelons in mid-Michigan.

The Ingham County Sheriff's Office said, at around 5 a.m. Friday, the semi rear-ended another truck carrying plastic products that was stopped with a flat tire along the shoulder of westbound I-96 at M-52/Stockbridge Road, near exit 122.

That's in Leroy Township, about 60 miles northwest of Detroit.

Seen on photos and video posted to social media, the watermelon hauler ended up on its side in a ditch, spilling what reported to be hundreds of melons -- many of which busted open on the ground.

The sheriff's office said one of the truck drivers was taken to a local hospital for evaluation with minor injuries. No one else was hurt.

Crews worked for hours to remove watermelons from the trailer so it could be set upright, and the Lansing State Journal reported two big trash bins were filled with watermelons, as of late Friday morning.

With the westbound side of the freeway down to one lane during the cleanup, drivers were advised to find an alternate route.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
