EATON RAPIDS, Mich. (WWJ) - Authorities say they've identified decomposed human remains found in the woods in mid-Michigan as those of a missing woman.

According to the Eaton County Sheriff's Office, 35-year-old Stephanie Lynette Southwell of Lansing was last seen alive in the Lansing area about a year ago.

Her body was in "an advanced stage of decomposition" and could not immediately be identified when it was discovered by someone walking in the area Wilbur Highway and Spruce Road in Eaton Rapids, southwest of Lansing, on March 27 of this year

While investigators were not immediately able to determine how she died, officials said they are investigating the case as a homicide.

Since that time, detectives have been working in conjunction with the Michigan State University Departments of Anthropology and Integrative Biology along with the Medical Examiner’s Office to make a positive ID.

No arrests have been made and no suspects have been named as an investigation continues.

Anyone with information about Southwell's death or her last known whereabouts is asked to call Det. Rick Buxton at 517-323-8484, or Det. Troy Gardner at 517-543-5519. To remain anonymous, tipsters can call Crime Stoppers of Mid-Michigan at 517-483-7867.
