Body Pulled From Walled Lake Had Cinderblocks Attached

WALLED LAKE (WWJ) - Oakland County authorities now say foul play is not suspected in the death of a man whose body was found in Walled Lake.

Following an autopsy, the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office has listed the cause of death as drowning by suicide.

Oakland County Sheriff's Department investigators were called to the lake Tuesday afternoon after a boater discovered the body near Mercer Beach, on the north end of the beach off of Walled Lake Drive.

Authorities said cinderblocks were tied to the man's leg, and pile was cinderblocks was in the beach's parking lot Thursday. It was unclear how long the block they had been there.

Investigators have not yet released any details about the victim, other than to say that he was reported missing on Sunday. His car was found parked outside a nearby party store.

Earlier, officials speaking to WWJ's Jon Hewett said it appeared that the body had been in the water for a couple of days.

Nearby resident Rosetta Michongwe is a lakeside resident who told WWJ's Charlie Langton the situation is very unusual.

"This is a very busy beach in the summer, so I'm really surprised that nobody found the body," she said.

Another nearby resident told Langton it "was kind of scary, actually" and "insane to think about."

Edward Gilbert, a Walled Lake resident who swims there every day, was skeptical about the possibility of suicide.

"If he had cement blocks to his legs, somebody helped him, he didn't do it by himself," Gilbert surmised.

The discovery came a day after the body of a man who drowned Sunday in White Lake was recovered. On Monday, authorities found the body of a Southfield woman who drowned after jumping into the Detroit River near Belle Isle on Saturday.
