Body Spotted By Kayakers Pulled From Clinton River

STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - Sterling Heights police have a mystery on their hands after a body was pulled from the Clinton River.

According to Lt. Mario Bastianelli, the investigation began Saturday when kayakers called police to report seeing a man's body floating in the river in Macomb County.

Sterling Heights Fire and police, assisted by Shelby Township officers, searched for that body but came up empty handed.

Then on Monday, another kayaker reported seeing a body that matched the description of the one spotted on Saturday.

This time authorities were able to find it, according to Bastianelli, who told WWJ's Zahra Huber that police recovered the body from the water behind a property along Utica Road near 17 Mile and Dodge Park Road.

As an investigation continues, many questions remain -- including how the man ended up in the water.

"We don't have any report of anyone actually seeing this person on shore," Bastianelli said. "...We haven't recovered a kayak, or anything like that, to say that this was a kayaker or this was a person biking in the park -- we don't know."

"Obviously everything's still under investigation," he added. "The body was turned over to the Macomb County Medical Examiner."

Details about the man, including his name and age, were not immediately released.

Anyone with information about this case should call Sterling Heights police at 586-446-2800.
