(WWJ) A vigil was held Monday night in Niles, Mich., to honor a 7-year-old boy who reportedly drowned at a birthday party this weekend.

More than 200 attended the vigil for Ayden Smith, who played on the Brandywine Cal Ripken Little League team.

“My son — he was just an angel,” Adam Smith, 42, of South Bend, said, per the South Bend Tribune.

His father told the newspaper Ayden drowned Saturday at a birthday party when he accidentally fell into a family's backyard pool.

Michigan State Police confirmed they are investigating the death but declined to verify any details about the case because the investigation is ongoing.

A Go Fund Me page set up Saturday to raise $3,500 for costs related to Ayden’s death had raised $2,500 by Tuesday morning.

Condolences poured into the Go Fund Me site.

"So heartbreaking for you," Gayle Graverson wrote. "I don't know you but I have a grandson who is your sons age and loves baseball as well. My heart breaks for you. Take comfort in the fact that he is in the arms of Jesus. Praying for comfort for you all."
