DETROIT (WWJ) -- A 17-year-old boy from the Highland Park area is in the hospital Saturday night after nearly drowning in the Detroit River.

He was pulled from the waters off Belle Isle after going under and not resurfacing.

Michigan State Police say they were called to the scene just before 8 p.m. The boy was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital and he has a good heartbeat and blood pressure, but is not breathing on his own.

MSP say the medical staff are going to start warming the boy up to see if he will breath on his own.

The boy's parents were on the scene at the time and followed to the hospital. Police say the child was playing with other kids at the beach when he went underwater.
