April 30, 2018 - 7:24 am

DETROIT - The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) is celebrating Star Wars Day on Friday, May 4, at 6 p.m. in a galactic way. The DIA invites the public to dress up as their favorite Star Wars character to be part of a group photo on the front steps of the museum. The first 200 people to arrive will receive two VIP tickets to the DIA’s upcoming exhibition “Star Wars and the Power of Costume” that opens May 20.
The exhibition provides an up-close look at costumes of some of the most beloved—and infamous—characters in cinema history, among them Queen Amidala, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Stormtroopers, Chewbacca, Han Solo, X-wing Pilots and Droids, including C-3PO and R2-D2.
“This will be a really fun event, and we look forward to seeing the creativity of Star Wars fans as they don their best costumes,” said Elliot Wilhelm, DIA curator of film and the exhibition curator. “It’s also a good time for people to get additional exhibition tickets with no online service charge.”
The DIA will have extended hours during the exhibition’s run (see below) and timed tickets are required. Tickets are free for DIA members, and others can purchase tickets at the DIA, online at www.dia.org/StarWars (service charge applies) or by calling 313-833-4005. Advance ticket purchase is highly recommended.
Costumes are encouraged for the outdoor photo, but masks, lightsabers and other weaponry props are not permitted inside the museum and can be checked for free in one of the museum’s coat-check rooms or lockers. To protect DIA artwork, full face paint is also prohibited, but a limited amount of face paint (for example, a design around the eye or cheek) is allowed.
