CADILLAC, MICH. - What was suspected to be a routine traffic stop ended up being so much more. At about 1 a.m. on May 12, troopers from Michigan State Police pulled over Scott McDaniel. The 30-year-old was found to be driving with a suspended license as well as no insurance.

The findings didn’t stop there.

After the traffic stop, the troopers conducted a search of McDaniel’s person and found approximately one gram of methamphetamine.

The troopers then searched McDaniel’s car. No other drugs were found, but the troopers did stumble upon some precious metals.

Hidden in a CD case in the back seat of McDaniel’s car, he had ten 10-ounce silver bars and four 1-ounce platinum bars stashed away. The price of the bars is estimated to be around $5,000.

McDaniel was arrested that morning and sent to the Wexford County Jail.

Following an investigation, it was discovered that McDaniel had stolen the bars from a resident in Mesick, 20 miles away from Cadillac.

Three days after McDaniel’s arrest, the Michigan State Police was sent a tip that accused McDaniel of trading some platinum bars for a Jeep and a camper in Leroy, MI, 16 miles from Cadillac.

Upon arriving at the residence in Leroy, troopers found more platinum bars buried in the backyard, digging up roughly $29,000 worth of bars.

McDaniel has been charged with possession of meth, larceny over $20,000 00, driving while license suspended, operating without security (insurance) and two counts of habitual offender.
