HAMTRAMCK (WWJ) - A man is in custody after he allegedly crashed into a utility pole and triggered a house fire and a mass power outage in Hamtramck.

The incident happened around 4:30 a.m. Friday when a Dodge Charger slammed into a utility pole at Conant and Carpenter streets. The pole fell down and caused a chain reaction, which led to an apartment building along Moran Street catching fire. Mike Stout has lived in the building for five years.

"Well, I came out and there was a car wrecked on that pole over there. I didn't think nothing of it, I just went back to sleep, and then they was knocking on my door about an hour later and said the house was on fire," Stout told WWJ's Charlie Langton.

The driver, a man in his early 20s, fled the scene after the collision but was eventually located and taken into custody.

Roughly 2,000 homes and businesses were left without power. Around 8 a.m., power had been restored to all but about 50 locations.

No injuries were reported.

The incident remains under investigation, but police say alcohol might be a factor.
