ROMULUS (WWJ) - Police say a woman was killed when a cement mixer overturned and fell onto her car in Romulus.

The accident happened Friday morning at the intersection of Van Born and Merriman roads, just north of Detroit Metro Airport.

The fully-loaded cement mixer rolled over and landed on top of a four-door passenger vehicle. Cement also spilled into the vehicle.

Police say the female driver was killed in the crash. Officials won't be able to tell if anyone else is in the vehicle until the cement mixer is turned upright and removed.

"The only thing we can tell right now is we can see one female driver. We can't see anything else in that car besides the female. ... There doesn't appear to be anyone alive in that car," Romulus Police Capt. Josh Monte told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "We're still not able to tell how many occupants are in the car because the way the cement truck is lying, the drum of the cement truck is on top of the vehicle."

The truck driver received minor injuries and gave a statement to police at the scene.

Circumstances leading up to the crash weren't immediately clear.

"We're still trying to identify what exactly happened here," said Monte. "We're still obtaining video from some of the gas stations on this corner. So once we're able to pull that video and take a look at that video, we'll be able to make a definitive decision on what exactly happened here."

The intersection remains closed as officials investigate the scene. Drivers are urged to avoid the area. Take Middlebelt Road, Wayne Road and Ecorse Road as possible alternates.
