August 22, 2018 - 5:09 pm

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Inkster man has been charged in the hit-and-run death of a Taylor man after the Motor City Muscle festival in downtown Detroit.

According to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, 29-year-old Brian Keith Garner, Jr. was driving westbound on Jefferson Ave. near Griswold St., just after 10 p.m. Sunday, when he ran a red light, and struck 22-year-old Michael Cavanaugh as he was crossing Jefferson in the crosswalk.

Cavanaugh was taken by EMS to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Garner fled the scene, prosecutors say, but turned himself in the following day at the the Detroit Police Department's Sixth Precinct.

He was arraigned in 36th District Court Wednesday afternoon  reckless driving causing death, and failure to stay at the scene of a crash.

Bond was set at $250,000 cash or surety, and two further court dates were scheduled in the case: a probable cause conference on August 29, and a preliminary exam on September 4, both before Judge Kenneth King.
