(WWJ) A Clinton Township man has been arrested for allegedly operating a dental practice out of his basement.

According to Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith, 54-year-old Leka Gjokaj had all the equipment, including a dentist chair, X-ray machine, utensils, and molds for teeth.

What he didn't have, Smith said, was a dentist's license or proper documents to be in the country.

Smith said Gjokaj, who is from Albania, is in the U.S. on an expired work visa. He allegedly admitted he saw one to two patients per day in his home, Shulock St. near Hall Rd and Heydenreic, through referrals from people at his church.

"Apparently his equipment was bought of off EBay and through China," Smith told WWJ's Mike Campbell and other reporters. "The problem that we have with this is, the danger that he is creating, preying on patients with dental needs. They're coming to his house thinking that he is a licensed dentist."

Bond was set $5,000, 10 percent for Gjokaj on a charge of practicing without a license.

Gjokaj's attorney Paul Lulzjuraj said his client indeed has a dental license, while admitting he does not know whether Gjokaj is licensed to practice in the U.S.

Lulzjuraj told reporters that Gjokaj recently filed paperwork requesting an extension of his work visa.

Gjokaj could serve four years in prison if he's convicted, and is facing federal detention after overstaying his visa.
