Country Fresh Milk Plant Shutting Down, Walmart To Blame

June 27, 2018 - 10:13 am

LIVONIA (WWJ) - A longtime milk processing plant in Livonia will close later this summer.

About 160 employees at the Country Fresh milk processing plant will lose their jobs by the end of August.

"We expect the separations to be permanent," the company said in a letter to the state.

The plant, off Merriman near Plymouth, is one of seven owned by Dean Foods being shut down across the U.S.

The president of UAW Local 174, which represents the employees, says the closure is the result of Walmart starting its own milk production. Some workers could be relocated, but the union says many are 50- to 60-years-old and finding new positions may be tough.

A meeting is expected next month with the company and the union to work out severance terms.
