Days-Long Standoff Ends With Suspect Dead In St. Clair Shores

ST. CLAIR SHORES (WWJ) - A police standoff that lasted 28-hours following a shooting during a Fourth of July celebration in St. Clair Shores is finally over.

SWAT officers found the 58-year-old suspect dead around 2:30 a.m. Saturday when they entered the home, on St. Margaret Street near 13 Mile and Masonic. The suspect's 60-year-old girlfriend was also found dead inside the home, according to police. Causes of death were not immediately determined.

Police were called to the home around 10 p.m. Thursday after a 10-year-old girl and 62-year-old woman were shot following an argument over fireworks. Both were treated and released from the hospital.

"He was upset that some kids were using fireworks," said St. Clair Shores Deputy Police Chief Gary Crandall. "He went out with a flashlight, or some type of light, and that made the neighbors upset. They asked him to stop flashing the light and, at that point, that’s when it all started."

As officers arrived on the scene, the man fled inside the home and continued firing shots at both officers and others on the street. Officers surrounded the home but the suspect refused to exit. On multiple occasions throughout the standoff, the suspect continued to fire shots at officers and police robots.

"Officers would walk around and we’d hear a bunch of gunshots. We used the GPV vehicle to try and breach the door, he shot at them again," Crandall said. "Every time a robot gets close to him, he’s opening fire on the robots. We are trying to come up with different ways to get him out of the house.”

On Friday night, Michigan State Police pumped water into the house in an attempt to get the suspect to surrender.

Residents were told to stay clear of the area while the situation was ongoing.

The incident remains under investigation.
