WEST BLOOMFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - More details have been released by authorities about a Costco jewelry heist and manhunt that prompted a neighborhood lockdown in Oakland County.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, two 20-year old men from Detroit are facing charges after they led police on a chase following the smash-and-grab at the Costco store near M-5 and 14 Mile Road in Commence Township Monday night.

Investigators said the suspects used an ax and sledgehammer to break into a display case, and ordered employees not to move. They then allegedly removed jewelry from the case, hopped into a car, and fled the scene.

West Bloomfield Township police officers located the suspect vehicle, which was determined to have been stolen out of Wayne County, and attempted to make a traffic stop.

During the ensuing chase, which involved West Bloomfield police and multiple OCOS units, the suspects drove through muddy residential backyards before crashing their getaway car into a home near 14 Mile and Maple roads.

"It hit (the house), but then it was still able to keep going until it hit a tree, and that's when it really but an end to that car moving," Bouchard said, adding that no residents were hurt.

"Thankfully it was in a spot where it didn't put anybody at risk," the sheriff said.

One suspect quickly was taken into custody while the other got away on foot.

Police then placed the neighborhood on lockdown, telling residents to remain inside their homes with their doors locked, and ordered extra patrols through the night.

A short time later, the sheriffs' office says the suspect was spotted by officers assigned to the perimeter and another foot pursuit ensued -- but he got away again.

An intensive search involving several area police departments departments, a police task force, an OCOS helicopter and K9 teams eventually ended with the second suspect's arrest by undercover officers in the area of Inkster and Maple roads.

Sheriff's investigators said the two men, both 20-year-old Detroit residents, are also suspects in other robberies across metro Detroit. They remain lodged in the Oakland County Jail awaiting charges.

Their names have not yet been released as an investigation involving several local jurisdictions continues.

Bouchard said the stolen jewelry was recovered.
