Detroit Auto Show Removing The Snow, Ice From Event Beginning 2020

DETROIT (WWJ) - A move is in the making and executives with the North American International Auto Show say next January will be the last time you have to fight the snow and ice to visit the show.

WWJ AutoBeat Reporter Jeff Gilbert spoke with North American International Auto Show Executive Director Rod Alberts about the move.

The date of the auto show is not the only change coming to the week show. The late spring-time show will include outside exhibits and incorporate a revitalized downtown Detroit according to Alberts.

The move-in time for automakers and suppliers will be shortened. The lower cost for exhibitors means that some brands that have been missing, namely some of the European auto makers, could see a cost effective exhibit again in Detroit.

"No question about it," says Alberts. "Because the idea is to reduce our move-in time, we're going to make this return on investment and a value added and the cost reduction is all a part of it."

Alberts said a spring show could also mean a new look for Charity Preview but did not provide details, nor would he elaborate on a name change for the event - but it seems likely that under branding to highlight changes - the name will be among those on the move.

The 2020 auto show will be held the week of June 7.
