DETROIT (WWJ) -- A 14-year-old high school student in Detroit is awaiting a preliminary hearing after an alleged classroom attack at Cody High School left a 63-year-old substitute teacher in the hospital.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office says the teenager struck and kicked the teacher inside a classroom shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday. School authorities detained the student until police officers arrived and palced him in custody.

FOX 2 in Detroit reports that other students then attacked the student in retaliation for assaulting the teacher, which was caught on phone video. The teacher allegedly told school officials the teen had brought drugs to school, which led him to run into the classroom and assault her.

The teacher was reportedly in stable condition and expected to recover.

The boy, whose identity has not been released, has been charged with Aggravated Assault, Possession of Marijuana and Creating a Disturbance in School.

A preliminary hearing was expected to take place Friday afternoon before Magistrate Leslie Graves at the Juvenile Detention Center.

The prosecutor's office stresses that the charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
