Detroit Cop Suspended After Beating Naked Woman At Receiving Hospital

The "troubling" incident was caught on video

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit police officer has been suspended with pay after he was seen beating naked woman at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

The woman -- reportedly a patient suffering from an episode -- was punched several times by an 18-year veteran of the DPD during a confrontation, with other officers holding her.

The beating was caught on cell phone video by a witness, and provided to WJBK-TV, who said it was clear the woman was not mentally stable.

Police Chief James Craig said he has seen the video, which he called "troubling," and a full investigation is underway.

"A lot of questions emerging," the chief told WWJ's Zahra Huber and other reporters Thursday. "Why didn't we consider a Taser? Why didn't we wait for the backup? What actions, if any, did the officer's partner take at the time he was deploying strikes?"

"Those are questions that we will have answered."

Craig said prosecutor's office has been contacted.

The chief added that, out of the roughly 500 calls the DPD handles a month regarding a situation with a mentally ill person, he believes a majority of them are handled very well. Of those called, Craig said, about 100 involve a mentally ill person who is armed.
