(WWJ) A group of Detroit first responders were honored today for their effort in saving the life of a 2-year-old girl who nearly drowned at her family’s pool last month.

Firefighters Jordan Evans, Jordan Cluster and EMT Kyiara Oldham were honored.

Evans says the training kicked in to help them revive the young victim’s lifeless body as the ambulance sped to the hospital.

"I have a little brother, 7 years old, but I try to put myself in the other person's situation, like if they were there and that was my little brother I would definitely want them to do the best they could," he said.

Cluster said it was his first encounter in a critical life-or-death situation in the line of duty.

"Her color started coming back, we started to get a pulse ... We just kept at it until we got to the hospital," he recounted

Oldham, who has been on the job for six months, said it was "something special" to keep the girl alive.

An experience he'll never forget.

"The biggest thing going through your mind is to remain calm,"Oldham said. Anything else produces chaos and chaos is the enemy of a successful outcome.
