Detroit 'Freezer Mom' Who Killed 2 Kids Catches Charges Behind Bars

PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - This Detroit mother has not been a model prisoner.

A spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections says Mitchelle Blair, who is spending life in prison for killing two of her children and hiding their bodies in a freezer, has had near 50 misconduct incidents while in prison for the past four years.

Blair, 39, was sentenced Thursday to between three and five years in jail on two charges of assaulting a prison employee as a habitual offender, reported. In court, Blair told the judge that if the officers wouldn't have provoked her, "it wouldn't have happened."

The first incident happened in May 2018 when she repeatedly kicked an officer who was trying to intervene in an argument between Blair and another prisoner, according to the report. The second incident, which the report says happened in July 2018, involved Blair throwing a Pringles can filled with feces and urine at an officer.

Blair is serving her time at the Women’s Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Pittsfield Township.

Mitchelle Blair pleaded guilty to two counts of murder in the deaths of Stephen Berry, 9, and Stoni Blair, 13, calling them "demons" and is sentenced to mandatory life in prison without the possibility of parole on Friday, July 17, 2015 in Detroit. It was March 2015 when a court officer attempted to serve an eviction notice at the Martin Luther King Apartments, in the 800 block of St. Aubin Street on the city’s east side, and saw the body of girl inside a stand-alone freezer. When officers arrived on the scene, they found the body of a second child, a boy, in the freezer.

The bodies had been stored in the freezer for more than a year. Police believe the children died months apart in 2012 and 2013. The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Stephen Berry, 9, died of multiple blunt trauma and thermal injuries, while Stoni Blair, 13, died of blunt trauma to the head.

Blair pleaded guilty to two counts of first degree murder, claiming the kids were sexually assaulting a younger sibling -- though she didn’t witness the alleged assaults and never reported anything to police.

Outlining in gruesome detail the abuse and deaths of her children, Blair said she wasn’t remorseful and called the children "demons." She described how she poured scalding water on them, beat them with sticks and put trash bags over their heads as her way of inflicting punishment.

"As horrendous as everybody thinks I am — that’s fine," Blair told the judge.

At trial, Blair openly declared her guilt and even said she would accept the death penalty if Michigan had it.

Blair's surviving daughter, who was 17-years-old at the time, described a house of horror, where she and her surviving brother, then 8-years-old, were beaten with an extension cord and piece of wood, hit with a hot curling iron and burned with a clothing iron.

"Blair tortured Stephen for approximately two weeks prior to his death by tying a belt around his neck, throwing hot water on him while in the shower and putting a plastic bag over his head," the state said, quoting the 17-year-old.

Stephen was "unresponsive" on Aug. 30, 2012, and Blair wrapped his body in bed linen and put him in the freezer, the state said.

Nine months later, Blair became "enraged" when Stoni said she didn’t like her surviving siblings and strangled the girl with a T-shirt and suffocated her with a plastic bag, state investigators said. Blair then made the teen "put Stoni in the deep freezer following her death."

The 8-year-old boy also was aware that his sister and brother were killed and subsequently placed in the freezer, investigators said.
