Man Saves Neighbor From Burning Third-Floor Apartment

August 15, 2018 - 8:00 am

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit man is being hailed a hero for saving a woman after her apartment caught fire on the city's east side.

The fire took off early Wednesday morning in a third floor unit at the Anthos Garden Apartments on Outer Driver at Connor.

Gerald Prince, who lives in a different building, said the smoke woke him up and he immediately went to help.

"The lady, she was in the front window. So I bust the window out and I drug her out of there. And it severed her arm so she was bleeding real bad," Prince told WWJ's Mike Campbell.

The woman was saying that her baby was trapped inside, so Prince and another man went back in.

"It was very intense. I mean, the smoke was thick. You couldn't see nothing. And the fire, it was contained in the kitchen," he said.

As it turns out, the baby and the woman's other child were actually at their grandmother's home.

The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment, though her current condition is unknown. No other injuries were reported.

Fire Chief Michael Jefferson called Prince a hero.

"The young gentleman over there crawled in there and pulled that lady out, saved her life," Jefferson said. "He needs to be commended."

A cause of the fire remains under investigation.
