DETROIT (WWJ) - A 30-year-old woman has avoided jail time after she was caught on video beating her 2-year-old son outside their Detroit home.

Rolaunda Paul was sentenced Tuesday to five years probation on a charge of second degree child abuse

According to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, video of the incident showed Paul kicking and hitting the toddler on the sidewalk in front of an apartment building on Delaware Street on April 10.

The disturbing footage, released by WJBK-TV, showed an adult appear to intentionally trip a small child, kicking him while he's down before striking him and shaking him violently. In a statement, prosecutors described the suspect's actions as an "assault."

Family members told Fox 2 that Paul feels ashamed for her actions, telling reporters the child was not injured.

In Michigan, second-degree child abuse is a Class C felony for a first-time offender. The maximum penalty for a conviction is 10 years in prison.
