Detroit Police Arrest 2 Men For Illegally Dumping Materials

One suspect was caught dumping two mattresses out of the bed of a pickup truck

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit police have arrested a pair of men who illegally dumped materials in different ares of the city.

Authorities say on Nov. 5 investigators from the general assignment unit received information that a suspect driving a red Chevy truck was seen dumping two mattresses on the southwest side of the city.

Nearly a week later on Nov. 11 officers located the suspect and arrested him for littering.

Fidel Acosta-Jimenez of Detroit was charged with Littering, issued a blight violation of $500 and his vehicle was impounded.

In a separate incident, police received a tip on Oct. 24 that a man was seen illegally dumping tired in the 700 block of E. McNichols Road. Officers were provided cellphone footage of a gray 2009 Chevrolet van dumping the tires and they conducted an investigation and were able to locate the vehicle.

The officer initiated a traffic stop of the vehicle which was still in the area. The driver of the van admitted that he dumped tires and was still in possession of tires when the vehicle was stopped. 

Police arrested James Derwa of Warren and he was charged with Littering, issued a blight violation of $200. His vehicle was also impounded.

Since the inception of the illegal dumping initiative there have been 208 warrants issued, 86 arrests made, 190 blight violations issued and 102 vehicles impounded, according to a release from the Detroit Police Department.
