Detroit Police Officer Injured In Hit-And-Run Crash

June 13, 2018 - 6:25 am

DETROIT (WWJ) - A driver who fled the scene after striking a police SUV, trapping one of the officers inside the vehicle, has been taken into custody.

The two Detroit Police officers were on duty just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when a driver making a left on Nevada at Fenelon, near Mound, crashed into them. The crash was so severe, one of the officers had to be cut from the vehicle with the jaws of life.

Both officers were taken to the hospital. Officials say one is being treated for a broken arm while the other was checked out as a precaution.

The suspect, a 26-year-old man, initially fled the scene after the crash but was taken into custody Wednesday morning at the Marathon gas station on Savage and Van Dyke.

The crash remains under investigation.
