Detroit Radio Legend Mike Clark Dead At 63

October 16, 2018 - 2:51 pm

DETROIT (WWJ) - Much-loved longtime Detroit radio host Mike Clark has died at age 63.

According to a post on Clark's Facebook page, early Tuesday afternoon, Clark -- formerly of popular, long-running "Drew & Mike Show" on WRIF -- passed away Monday night.

"He is now flying high like he always wanted," the post continues. "We do ask for the privacy of the family members as they mourn his passing but welcome to leave any posts or comments below and they will be passed on to the family."

The "Drew and Mike" show left WRIF, 101.1 FM, in 2013 after more than 20 years on the air.

A cause of death is not known at this time, although Clark's longtime co-host Drew Lane told reporters his friend had dealt with some medical issues over the past few years.

"I can't believe I'm not going to hear his laugh anymore," Lane told The Detroit News. "He had an incredible, incredible laugh. And he was very self-depreciating. The biggest laugh was always when he shared something from his own life like when he drove out of his garage with the garage door down."

As the news got out, shared memories and kind words began pouring in, both from colleagues and the public.

WWJ Newsradio 950 Traffic Reporter KT worked as a producer for Drew & Mike from 1989 to 1994.

"The funniest jokes were probably about the sexual innuendos. If I didn't have one of those before 7 a.m. my day wasn't started," she said, with a laugh. "I cred laughing every day; belly laughing. The radio marathons that we did, the funniest parts were at two in the morning, especially when he was in sleep deprivation."

Social media immediately lit up with condolences.

Fox 2 sports broadcaster Jennifer Hammond‏ tweeted it's "sad day," for fans of the Drew & Mike show she called "a Detroit Institution."

Sports and traffic reporter Pete Spivak replied: "I grew up listening to Drew and Mike on my way to @delasallehs each morning from 1989-1993. Mike Clark was getting his pilot's license during these years and some of the stories were so damn hilarious."

Zach Clark wrote: "Horrible. Mike Clark is one of the reasons I fell in love with the radio many years ago. If not for ‘Drew & Mike’ who knows what I’d be doing right now. He was only 63. The Detroit media legend landscape is robust. Mike Clark sits among the greats. Condolences."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
