Detroit Wing Co. Delivers Free Lunch To TSA Agents At Metro Airport

A few thousand wings and some mac & cheese can go a long way during the shutdown.

ROMULUS, Mich. (WWJ) -- Transportation Security Agency employees all across the country have been working without pay for about a month to keep airport security functioning as best it can.

On Monday, one local company decided to thank some agents, right in its backyard.

The Detroit Wing Co. delivered upwards of 2,000 chicken wings -- traditional and boneless -- and loads of macaroni & cheese to both terminals at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, giving some 400 furloughed TSA agents a welcomed surprise for lunch.

DWC owner Gus Malliaras says he's happy to help out and hopes other restaurants will follow in their footsteps to help the agents out, turning the idea into a bigger deal.

“It’s pretty important to us as a company to be involved in the communities that we’re in, try to be as supportive as possible,” Malliaras told WWJ's Vickie Thomas.

Malliaras just opened his fifth location in Taylor, near the airport. Other locations include Detroit, Eastpointe, Chesterfield and Southfield.

Malliaras says he is appreciative of the agents working without pay, so he simply wanted to do something nice for them, even if it's just a little lunch.

“If they want us to come back again, we’re happy to do it again,” Malliaras said.

Politics aside, Malliaras says he's just trying to take care of people.

"These people are working hard, and for us that’s kind of just the bottom line. They’re involved in the community here and we’re now a local company, so we’re just trying to look at it as just taking care of the workers," he said. “The politics behind it, look at that however you will. We’re just here to do one small, little part.”

The government has been in a partial shutdown since Dec. 22, leaving the TSA in "uncharted territory."
