SHELBY TWP, Mich. (WWJ) - Authorities believe a 20-year-old man became entangled in seaweeds during a swim eventually leading to his death.

Rayven Elia of Sterling Heights was swimming with a friend when both appeared to be in distress and got the attention of other people at the Winter Cove picnic area at Stony Creek Metro Park - who called 911.

His friend made it back to shore with the help of a nearby boater but first responders believe Elia was under water for about 15 minutes before being rescued and CPR performed. He was transferred to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead early Sunday morning.

Authorities say that both males became tangled in some heavy vegetation while swimming which caused them to have difficulties swimming. Neither male was wearing a life jacket.

This incident remains under investigation by the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office.
