DETROIT (WWJ) - You may have picked out your dog because you liked the color but a new study shows that a dog's color can reveal a few other health factors.

It turns out a dog's color can reveal how long it will live -- and if it's at risk for certain health problems reports WWJ Health Reporter Dr. Deanna Lites.

Australian researchers looked at more than 33,000 Labrador retrievers in different colors ... black, yellow and chocolate.

They found that chocolate labs are more likely to have ear infections and skin problems and will die about a year sooner than labs of other colors.

Researchers say it may be because the chocolate color is a recessive gene so when it comes to breeding, both parents for the puppies need to be chocolate in color which will result in a greater chance for ear and skin problems.
