(WCCO) Police say a toddler and pregnant woman were injured at a birthday party on Detroit's east side when a pit bull jumped the fence and attacked the gathering.

It happened on Outer Drive.

Theh pit bull was stopped when the homeowner, the grandfather of the child who is licensed to carry, fired shots, police said.

The toddler, 13-months-old, suffered a bite to the leg, while the pregnant woman, seven months along, reportedly fell on her stomach during the melee. The grandfather's wife suffered a cut to her arm.

"I understand that people have high regard for pit bull animals, but if you don't manage and take care of these dogs, when they are not around other humans, you have to prepare so you are looking out for the safety of your neighbor," the homeowner told FOX 2. "Too many times these things end in tragedy and somebody dies. It is heart wrenching. I never want to go through this again."

Every victim was transported to the hospital for treatment while Detroit's Animal Control took the dog away.
