DETROIT (WWJ) - A dog is the only survivor of a head-on crash that happened overnight on Detroit's east side.

Three people were killed when a Ford Fusion and a Crown Victoria collided along Gratiot Avenue at Liberal, between 7 Mile Road and State Fair, just before 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Police say one vehicle was traveling south on Gratiot and was attempting to turn when it struck the other vehicle, which was traveling north on Gratiot.

Both drivers were trapped inside their vehicles and pronounced dead at the scene.

A 57-year-old man who was a passenger in one of the vehicles was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The dog was riding inside one of the vehicles, but was not injured.

It's unknown if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
