Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said 28-year-old Alyssa Marie Verbeke of Otter Lake, Michigan, appeared in court to face murder and other charges in connection with the death of 19-year-old Daziah Tanae Crawford of Detroit last weekend.

According to investigators, Verbeke was fleeing Warren police southbound on Fairport St. from Warren into Detroit when she ran a stop sign near Schoenherr Rd. and 7 Mile, and broadsided the victim's vehicle.

Verbeke ran off following the crash, police said, but was tracked down by Warren officers.

Verbeke, Crawford and a 15-year-old girl in Crawford's car were all taken by EMS to a local hospital, where Crawford died of her injuries.

Worthy said Verbeke is charged with the following: Second Degree Murder; Fleeing a Police Officer First  Degree ; Reckless Driving Causing Death; Operating – License Suspended, Revoked, Denied – Causing Death; and Controlled Substance – Possession of a Controlled Substance Less Than 25 Grams.

According to Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer, Verbeke has a long list of priors and had a warrant out for her arrest at the time of the incident. Michigan Department of Corrections records show several previous convictions on drug charges.

Verbeke was remanded into custody at her arraignment in 36th District Court, Wednesday afternoon. She will be back in court for a probable cause conference on Aug. 22.
