DETROIT (WWJ) - A driver who didn't get very far while trying to escape from police is now facing criminal charges.

The incident unfolded around 2:15 a.m. Tuesday when troopers on patrol observed an oncoming vehicle with a burned out headlight on Exeter Street just north of 7 Mile Road, near John R on the east side.

As troopers turned around to make a traffic stop, the suspect vehicle quickly made a right turn northbound onto Exeter. Before the vehicle could be stopped, the driver crashed into two parked vehicles.

The male passenger exited the vehicle and surrendered immediately without incident. The driver fled from the vehicle on foot but was caught a short time later after he tripped while running.

The passenger was released at the scene. The driver was lodged at Detroit Detention Center for resist and obstruct, hit-and-run, reckless driving and open alcohol in the vehicle.

No injuries were reported.
